Great bike and footpath, the Schufftrasse. But it's time to fix a spot or two.

The Schluff cycle path is actually very beautiful, but unfortunately here and there with roots under the asphalt.

There is some damage to the cycle path, especially between Vorst and Süchteln. The cycle path between Vorst and St. Tunis is currently being renewed (as of October 2022), and the route before Süchteln may also be repaired.

The route runs almost dead straight, through fields, forests and off the main roads.

Disused railway lines with solid pavement are suitable as low-grade bicycle highways for rapid movement. Hagen and Vorst are connected to each other on this approx. 2 km long section

Straight ahead as far as the eye can see ...

In the summer months when there is oncoming traffic etc, it is best to be careful with the nettles on the right and left 😉

PS: "if you don't want to hear you have to feel" 😅🥴

I don't think this route is very pretty. The path is relatively narrow and is often interrupted by roads/crossings, where every time a cyclist has to give way and is slowed down by grids. You don't really get into a driving flow. In addition, the asphalt is rather mediocre and there are quite a few breaking roots.

Okay as an everyday bike path, not very suitable for sporty touring riders.

Well-paved bike path on an old railway line through the fields on the Lower Rhine far from the noise of the streets - that's what makes cycling fun!

The Schluff is Krefeld's historic steam railway.

The name "Schluff" is derived from the colloquial term "Schluffen" for slippers. In a figurative sense, Schluff is a tired person who can no longer lift his legs and drags his slippers, or Schluffen, across the floor. The leisurely travel speed of the train and the puffing sound of the locomotive's steam engine are, so to speak, onomatopoeic reminiscent of a Schluff.

The Schluff is now operated as a museum railway by SWK Mobil, with the support of the associations "Schluff and historical means of transport Krefeld", "Friends of the Krefeld Railway" and the "Interest Group for Rail Transport Krefeld" and, since 2010, by "Hafen Krefeld GmbH & Co. KG", which operates the Krefeld Rhine port.

History of the route and its operation

In 1868, the Krefeld Railway was founded as the "Crefeld-Kreis-Kempener Industrie-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft" (CKKIE). In 1880, the "Crefelder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft" (CEG, later KEG) took over the CKKIE, which had gone bankrupt in 1874. In 1914, the CEG's vehicle fleet included 19 steam locomotives, 51 passenger carriages, 10 baggage cars, 2 mail cars, 101 covered and 83 open freight cars, 57 coke cars and 8 special wagons. In 1978, this company became KREVAG, today's SWK Mobil. Passenger traffic on the rails had already been discontinued by 1951, and freight traffic followed until 1985. Today, only the connection between St. Tönis and Hülser Berg remains of the network. The historic routes from St. Tönis to Süchteln and from Hülser Berg to Moers have been partially preserved as a combined cycle and hiking trail.

                                      The steam locomotive

The locomotive Graf Bismarck XV (No. 98 8921) was taken over by the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum of the German Railway History Society in 1979. It was built by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel under the serial number He 29893/47. The locomotive is of the type D 600. It is a relatively young locomotive (built in 1947) of the "D n2t" type (four coupled axles, wet steam boiler with two cylinders, tank locomotive), which was originally used at the Graf Bismarck mine in Gelsenkirchen.

In order to avoid embankment fires caused by flying sparks and ash falling onto the track, the locomotive was converted from coal to light oil firing in 1980 before being used on the wooded route to Hülser Berg. Until the main inspection in 2013/2014, the burner was a decommissioned burner from the heating plant of the Krefeld municipal utilities on Alte Gladbacher Strasse. As part of the main inspection, a new burner was installed in the Meiningen steam locomotive works.
