The Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen dug a borehole here before 1800. In 1836, the Privy Councillor of Finance Christian von Weiß took over this mine and named it "Bernhard" after his sovereign in 1838. Work continued in the mine until 1880.
The former mine's mining house was converted into a forest inn, the "Waldhaus Bernhard", by the Isenthal family in 1922. In 1962, GDR border troops demolished the former forest inn because it was located in the protective strip of the exclusion zone.
