It was a Saturday afternoon on June 1, 1929, when the United Evangelical Congregation Unterbarmen inaugurated its new cemetery chapel at Unterbarmer Friedhof. Since then, a stone angel has welcomed visitors to the staircase. It was created by the Wuppertal sculptor Ernst Hahn based on a living example, the wife of the pianist Harald Hellmannsberger

Because of its scenic location and the magnificent old tombs, the Unterbarmen cemetery is known and famous far beyond the borders of Wuppertal. A path with the tombs of many industrialists is popularly referred to as "Million Avenue".

The cemetery was inaugurated on May 5th, 1822 with the establishment of the Unterbarmen community and expanded in 1897. Its renewed expansion took place in 1911 through the purchase of a garden plot, initially only to prevent any other use of this area. The extended part clearly stands out from the older, strictly geometrically shaped part: winding paths as well as lawns, trees and shrubs give it a park-like character.

With an area of over 16 hectares and some gradients of up to 22%, it is not only the largest, but also the steepest burial ground in Barmen. There are currently around 20,000 divided grave sites. The number of burials is around 250 per year. In addition to individual and family graves, there are also larger grave fields for burial of certain groups of people or institutions: the grave field of the Rhenish Mission and the DRK sisterhood as well as graves for the fallen of World War I and for the victims of the bombing raid on Barmen in 1943. A Note for the mourners: For burials in the upper area of the cemetery, it is permitted to follow the funeral procession in a car at walking pace. In this case, it is sufficient to inform the local cemetery administration in advance.

Beautiful graves of the upper middle class, especially in the Alley of Millionaires, which give an idea of the importance of Wuppertal and its industry once.
