The Tomburg is worthwhile as a hiking trail, because from there you have a great view of the Cologne Bay and the Siebengebirge.

There is also the possibility for families to have a cozy picnic in two places, while the children climb around on the remains of the wall scattered around ...

Tomburg ruins today have a turbulent history. A blackboard explains the different epochs. Those who climb up to the castle ruins will be rewarded with a fantastic view.

From the former castle is not much to see - remains of a tower are still standing, but from here you have a magnificent view of the lowlands, especially on Rheinbach. That alone is worth the climb, which is not particularly exhausting.

The castle ruins can be seen from afar. In the book "Hikes for the soul - well-being paths Rhine, Ahr and Erft" from Droste-Verlag, which led us on this hike, the following can be read about the castle: Around the year 900, Count Palatine Herrmann built his manor on the Tomberg. The basalt rock of the extinct volcano provided the building material. In the 14th century, robber barons raged here, in 1473 the Duke of Jülich besieged the castle and destroyed it.
