The importance of glass in the region around Bad Driburg is comparable to that of coal and steel in the Ruhr area. The glassmaking tradition here goes back several centuries and has its origins in the forest glassworks. For a long time, the forest offered a main raw material for glass production: wood. When the tree population in the vicinity of the glassworks was exhausted, the glassmakers moved on.
