The carter Ilian is said to have run down there centuries ago. Hence the name. The stairs were used as a grain and beer path as early as the 13th century. The carters did not take the easy route through the Rodetal because customs had to be paid there.

The Ilian stairway is part of a medieval transport route and is located in the Nörten forest near the mountain "Hohe Steyer". It is a sandstone carved way, probably from the 13th century, in which the wheels of the former ox and horse carts were incorporated.

A visit to the Ilian Stairs is worth it, but be careful, it can be quite slippery.
The easily recognizable wagon tracks are very interesting.
