An existing chapel was elevated to a parish church in 1124. About 1254 a new church was built which has undergone all kinds of destruction and rebuilding. In 1845 the church was considerably enlarged after a design by Ferdinand Berckmans. The originally 17th-century choir was preserved. In 1940 the church was heavily damaged by war. In 1953-1954 the church was rebuilt according to a design by Leo De Graef, while the outer walls still standing were spared.
