Due to the rise of mechanized agriculture in the last century, 90 percent of the heathland in Europe disappeared in a short time. The Koude Heide is a remnant of this once extensive moorland. Originally heather was woodland. Poor soil with relatively little nutritional value. By grazing, cutting down and burning down the original forest, this poor soil could still be used for the benefit of humans and animals. Heide is not only very beautiful, it is also an important flowering and habitat for many special flora and fauna.
