In 1982, the 128.8-hectare pond area in the center of the Aischgrund was designated as the district's first nature reserve. The nature reserve "Vogelfreistätte Weihergebiet near Mohrhof" is well known for its diverse and rare bird life. Internationally, the area is also considered an "Important Bird Area". It was reported as one of the first FaunaFlora Habitat and Bird Protection Areas (Natura 2000).
