Poppenwind (Boppenwinden) was founded in the 6th/7th Century. The village was first mentioned around 1288-1315.[2] The name of the place is said to have been borrowed from Count Poppo, a Henneberg count. On the so-called Vogelherd in the area there was a castrum (castle) even before the place was first mentioned in a document. After its destruction in 1672, the Brno church was built from its stones. The village was laid out in a horseshoe shape. The village square, horse pond and the village linden tree, which was later planted as the imperial linden tree, are in the middle.

The Thirty Years' War also left its mark. The traditional costumes in the village have an ethnological background. There was also a 30 to 40 meter wide border between the Henneberg and Saxon areas, the Saxon Landwehr. The inner-German border existed a few kilometers from here after the Second World War until 1990. A school was built in 1842, followed by another in 1930; from 1950 the children of the village were enrolled in Brattendorf. In 1996 the municipality of Auengrund was founded, which the village also joined.
