Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881-1919) was one of the most important modern sculptors. Born in Duisburg, he lived in Düsseldorf, Paris, Berlin and Zurich. He worked internationally as an artist and took part in a large number of exhibitions. Together with his wife Anita, he had three sons, one of whom - the architect Manfred Lehmbruck - designed the Lehmbruck Museum, which opened in 1964. "In one of the most outstanding museum buildings of the post-war period, the Lehmbruck Museum presents a unique collection of modern sculptures.
Based on the work of Wilhelm Lehmbruck, this is where primitivism and cubism, abstraction and expressionism, constructivism and minimalism meet. In addition to the main works of Wilhelm Lehmbruck, the museum brings together works by Käthe Kollwitz, Constantin Brâncusi, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Henry Moore and Niki de Saint Phalle. The museum also has Germany's most important group of works by Alberto Giacometti. "

Wilhelm Lehmbruck was born in Meiderich in 1881, the fourth child of a family of miners. After studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he lived and worked in Paris, Zurich and Berlin, among others.

The Lehmbruck Museum shows works by Wilhelm Lehmbruck in a permanent exhibition. Other exhibitions focus on sculptures from the 20th and 21st centuries. Contemporary artists are also presented again and again. There is a sculpture park around the museum building.
