Ik fiets bijna elke week op een droge dag ca 70km. Vaak eerst een uurtje in de auto en daarna een ronde fietsen. Met Komoot plan ik een route langs opmerkelijke objecten: natuur, industrie, cultuur. Hier en daar plan ik ook lichamelijke uitdagingen: bergop, tegenwind, bospad en eenvoudig MTB-traject.
Onderweg fotografeer ik veel en zoek thuis de bijzonderheden op. Dat deel ik meestal op Komoot en op FB. Foto's krijgen bijna altijd een begeleidende tekst. Foto's die al veelvuldig online te vinden zijn hoef ik niet meer te maken. Ik fiets graag in Nederlandse landschappen en door dorpjes. Het Duitse Ruhrgebiet bezoek ik graag en dan drink ik het liefst koffie bij een kiosk en een bier in een eenvoudig café-restaurant. Ik woon in Didam en kom oorspronkelijk uit Bocholtz (L). Sinds het najaar van 2019 rijd ik steenbergen (Bergehalden) op. Ik heb ze bijna alle driehonderd (!) gehad. Op 7 jan 2020 heb ik een hersenbloeding gehad die me gelukkig niet tot een wrak heeft gemaakt. Ik ben in maart 2020 weer op de fiets gestapt. omdat ik daarvan wonderwel goed ben opgeknapt, lukt het weer om die 70 km op de fiets te rijden.
In de tweede helft van 2020 kom ik maar af en toe even over de grens met Duitsland. dus maak ik ritten in Nderland. Maar nu in augustus 2021 ga ik ook weer de grens over maar ik voel wel dat ik niet meer de kracht van vroeger heb, dus ik wacht op mijn bestelde elektrische fiets want ik wil wel nog die 70 km op één dag kunnen halen.

Today it starts so fresh that after a few kilometers I put on my rain jacket. That stops the wind a bit. There is hardly any normal wind, so it is nice to cycle on the old railway tracks. That jacket will soon be off.
There is of course more to see in the center of Essen. I am approached in a square by a young woman with the question if I want to help. I confirm that question, as long as it's not too heavy. She needs 4 people to unfold the three professional marquees, one on each leg. The three tents are there like this, each next to a lamppost to tie it somewhat windproof.
Essen is busy making the city more bicycle-friendly. If there is no clear and spacious cycle path, you can just go on the road (I ask a passing police officer that happens) or sometimes it is even better and they have made wide bicycle lanes where there were previously car lanes. There is also relatively little car traffic in the city. This is again confirmed by two resting cyclists at the Philharmonik, sitting under a statue of a giant.
Krupp's former home and the park surrounding it is now a musuem. It lies on the steep slope to the Ruhr and can therefore be seen from afar.
I turn into a narrow path next to the park and rush down. Unfortunately, the path is old and bumpy and narrow on both sides due to vegetation. So I only take advantage of the descent. I later come across the big difference in height between Ruhr and Essen at a place where I even have to walk to get to the top.
You will understand that a subway bun is necessary. By the way, that sandwich looks a lot like last week's döner. Here sandwich meat has been added instead of veal from the grill.
A kilometer in front of the car I see that I could have easily parked at a charging station and I notice that I lack some charging station experience.
The ride is a combination of three routes of the municipality of Essen: north, west and south

I am in Amersfoort and I have time. A traffic accident has happened on the road to Amersfoort and there is a long traffic jam on the provincial road. With my new e-car that is a pleasure; the distance to my predecessor is neatly maintained, steplessly. Today the walking is going reasonably well and a walk through the center can be done today. The brown fleet is located in the harbor near the old town. Further on you will see more white ships.
On the way back, the road is completely clear again.

Last week I asked about some 'highlights' around Gelsenkirchen. Some of them I already recognized from previous rides, but today a number of them have been recorded. I have to pay close attention on the navigation map because the points are indicated on it. But the points I've placed to shift the route a bit look exactly the same. Awkward, but so be it.
Next week around Dortmund. Anyone have any good ideas?
My understanding is that the city of Gelsenkirchen was pretty much the center of coal mining and ore supply. Now it is also a pretty poor city and especially the children from poorer families. They have received an extra blow during corona: poor internet at home, late or no delivery of a laptop by the government, poor and limited housing and many cannot count on support with homework at home. And then I suspect that the same thing happens here: the good teachers leave for richer neighbourhoods.
Nevertheless, I have come across nice working-class neighborhoods and neighborhoods in the region. They are old but seem very popular, partly because of the greenery around them.

Today I steered myself through quite a few forest trails. There you can see and feel that it has also rained in recent days: everywhere you come across water pools and mud baths. Still, I like to occasionally go on more difficult paths, which are often easier than a bike path in the city. The gravel roads with fine gravel also cycle away nicely and I often come across them, for kilometers. I have to be home a little in time and so I'm happy with some dead straight roads on a former military site with many abandoned bunkers. There are those dead straight roads where the spice bends all the way along the road and there is still a spacious bike path left. The roads after that are also straight for miles, that's coming along. After that, however, before and after Dinslaken it even goes downhill on a bike path next to a regional road. Nice and fast you would say, but everywhere cross roads with gutters or cars standing on them. But I'll be home in plenty of time.

I ventured a little further into Germany. Now with the electric car in which the bicycle also just fits, but now with some minor adjustments. …. Driving is wonderful, even on regional roads the car itself keeps the lane and the distance. …. On a bicycle it is exactly the other way around. There are bicycle paths along those regional roads, but the hard tires make you feel every bulge. In the city it is even worse, a one meter wide school bike path winds around every tree next to the road, becomes even narrower there and has been pushed up considerably by the tree roots. In Krefeld, the street designers do not cycle themselves, you can feel that….on the way back things are going better, wind from the side and go carts. Fortunately I see a bench in a side road. There an apple changes its berth. 70km.

What seemed to be a fairly dry day yesterday turns out to contain more rain this morning. But I don't think it's enough to leave. I knew that: once soaked and completely dried up. Then my mobile goes at its loudest and into my raincoat pocket. Most of the time I understand Komoot's voice instructions. Also nice if you are somewhere along the way and discover that you have seen it before. The first 25km I copied from another komoot user and is mainly through a forest. I drink the coffee somewhere away from my route. I know from a panorama photo on Streetview that there must be a cafe there. That is a disadvantage in Germany that you only sometimes have Streetview in a city or village and can therefore view the situation at home in advance. Fortunately, there are people who take and post 360-degree photos here and there. In addition, I still have Komoot with many photos on it. Because of the rain my unused handkerchiefs got wet. I hang them on the back of my bike to dry in the wind. Suddenly a guy drives next to me and says I'm losing cloths on the back. With a thank you he shoots off electrically again. I didn't see many people today because of the rain. But that makes cycling even easier. The last 25 km I mainly cycle on an old railway track, not over sleepers, but over fine gravel that can be cycled.

See part two. In the rain I must have pressed some wrong buttons and the program stopped. So now I have made two tours, together 68 km.

I can still ride my bike up and down for a few pictures. That will take me two hours and I can't cycle behind Wijchen today. On my way there in the car I received a phone call that someone had dropped out and that I could come today instead of in September. Two photos with an exposure time of 1 second is not that bad, but lying still for ten minutes in front of two others is very old-fashioned, even in a modern hospital. But then you will get something! Blurred black and white photos of your bones. haha!
The way back will be twice as long as the way out, now I have plenty of time.

74 km Südlohn – Gescher -Coesfeld - Rosendahl – Stadlohn. Beautiful clouds in the sky regularly block the sun. As a result, the temperature does not rise too far and it is good cycling. I'll be over the border before I know it and you can ride your bike without a mouth cap. I don't see anything special in Südlohn, but Gescher and Coesfeld are the nicest places. The latter clearly presents itself as a cattle town. Everywhere you see something about such an animal. What is also striking is that the region is full of Catholic features such as statues of St. Ludgerus, Saint Pancratius. and whole churches in every hamlet. I often come across St. John of Nepomuk. The good man came from the Czech Republic, studied a lot and rose considerably in the church. As the princess' confessor, he was asked if the princess was cheating. Because he doesn't want to say that, because of the secret of confession, he dies a horrific martyr's death (which one you look up yourself). I have resolved to find a cafe about ten to twenty km before the end. Or actually a terrace, but I only find Kaffee und Kuchen terraces. The Biergärten all seem closed. Then a beer at home…

The swallows skim low along the dike berm. So the bugs don't get that high. After a while I realize why. The first drops are falling, I keep cycling because I can hide under a highway bridge in the distance. I do that until it dries, less than ten minutes. But I drive well and good again on the dike and the rain breaks without seeing a shelter.
Fortunately, this is the day.
I long for some more favorable wind. it arrives at Tiel and my speeds increase from 13 km/h headwind to 26 with the wind at your back. Then the arrival time in Heteren will of course change again.
In Heteren I visit a five-year-old mother who was once a student of mine. I mean, of course, that she has a five-year-old child. That was a stubborn streak at the time and I sometimes appreciated that. They also often come up with innovative ideas.
