The gasworks area was built between 1892 and 1895 between Mendelssohnstrasse in the north and Gasstrasse in the south, according to the plans of the architect and civil engineer Schaar. The area was expanded over time in 1910, 1918 and 1926 as needed.
Previously, in the 13th century, the knight Otto von Bahren farmed his lands here, to whom the area now owes its name. The knight acted as the namesake not only for the entire area, which thereby gave up its former name "Forum Altes Gaswerk", but also for the districts of Ottensen and Bahrenfeld.
The Bahrenfeld gasworks was put into operation in 1896 as the successor to the gasworks on Große Elbstrasse by the former Altona gasworks. Initially, four flat gable roofs with red, unplastered brick facades and hall buildings with arched windows, which stand in pairs one behind the other, were built on the huge area.
It served as the largest gas production plant in Hamburg.

In 1938, it was shut down as a production plant. After the war damage from 1945 until the 1950s, crude benzene from the other gasworks in Hamburg continued to be stored and processed on the site. The plant was used as a container and compressor station.

From the 1950s and 1960s, activists such as artists and dropouts increasingly discovered empty industrial buildings in Hamburg and used them as studios, for residential purposes, car repair shops and warehouses.

In the 1970s, the industrial hall was used sporadically and for various purposes. The television series "Großstadtrevier" has its backdrop and showplace here on the site. The Ramikal company also produced animal feed in one of the former coal halls. In the early 1990s, the investor group Hollmann & Partner Vermögensverwaltung und Architekten became aware of the factory buildings with their typical brick buildings and founded the "Forum Altes Gaswerk".

The listed factory site was to be converted into high-quality commercial and residential areas. The buildings on the site were added to the list of historic monuments in 1996.

The monument ensemble includes the administration building, the clock house, the coal tower, four large halls as well as elevated tracks, a scale and a turntable for the railway. Today, it is one of the largest contiguous, listed areas in Europe, alongside Hamburg's Speicherstadt.

Another fine example of how old commercial yards in Bahrenfeld were given a new, modern use.
Today the area offers a mixture of offices, shops, hotels, a fitness center, restaurants, around 250 condominiums and a beautiful, small park, largely in the historical structure. The area recycling enabled both the historically extraordinary and listed building stock to be preserved and the requirement of a new town center for the Hamburg district to be realized.
      Really well done!
