The medieval Runkel Castle, first mentioned in 1159, still defines the townscape of Runkel today.
The mighty, well-fortified towers of Runkel Castle rise suddenly and unexpectedly on rigid, vertically sloping rocks in the middle of the lovely Lahn valley. Still today an example of an early medieval defense structure, it appears impregnable to the viewer from the Lahn side.
Ancestral hall, old paintings, old furniture, weapons and equipment, vaults with a large press (the Runkeler Rote was pressed here centuries ago), torture chamber, old masonry speaking tubes, etc.

Very beautiful historical town with a castle above the Lahn.
The castle can be visited.
Absolutely worth seeing!

Runkel has one of the most impressive and largest castle ruins in Hesse. For generations, the Lords of Runkel were busy with family disputes and the occasional expansion of their castle, in addition to collecting bridge tolls. Runkel was the center of the Upper County of Wied and thus a small princely residence.
