Before the reconstruction, it was often a nuisance for cyclists because the underpass was already narrow enough for pedestrians and therefore far too narrow for cyclists. Now, since the completion (1980) of the extensive widening of the historic Mariensteg bridge, it has become a milestone for the first bicycle priority route (FR 1) and Freiburg's cycle path network!
