The 54.63 hectare area, which was placed under nature protection in 1998, extends west of Bad Salzig, a district of the city of Boppard. The Salziger Bach flows not far to the south. The state road L 212 runs through the area and the Rhine flows to the east.

The purpose of protection is the preservation and development of the orchards and meadows as a habitat for rare plant and animal species that are threatened in terms of their existence and the corresponding communities, and because of their nature that defines the landscape and characterizes the site.

Thousands of fruit trees have been mapped here. The largest variety of cherry tree varieties for Germany was discovered here. Numerous species of birds, rich orchids and many species of insects have also made their home in this area.

In winter 2017, on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, further orchards were cleared and reactivated as part of the “Green Action”. With 35,000 euros, the areas were cleared of bushes and the old fruit trees were cut. Pruning trees is life-prolonging because it stimulates the growth of roots and crowns.

A shepherd with sheep and goats was also recruited for subsequent grazing. While the sheep are primarily important for the maintenance of the grassland, herds of goats help that areas that have just been de-bushed do not overgrow again
