Glaramara Summit

Hiking

Hikes to Glaramara take you to a lofty, rocky playground in surroundings of scenic magnificence. The last northern outpost of a massif system that includes the Scafells and the Bowfell group, it is no wonder that trails here reward with stunning mountain vistas.

Rising at the southern end of atmospheric Borrowdale, Glaramara and its subsidiaries split the valley in two. The River Derwent begins its journey to the west in the Seathwaite branch, whilst the Langstrath branch of Borrowdale wraps around the fell’s eastern side.

A rocky playground boasting incredible views

Most walking routes to Glaramara begin in these valleys, though strenuous expeditions could be launched from both Langdale and Eskdale. For the most part the going is rough but grassy on decent trails. Only once in the environs of the summit does the scrambler’s playground become apparent.

A number of jumbled tors adorn the apex of the fell, great for practising some hands on action. That is, if you are not admiring the views. Great End’s north facing crags mark the start of the Scafells proper, which rise behind. The Bowfell group scowl across at the Langdales, which are seen side-on, an interesting vantage. Directly north are beautiful Derwent Water and Keswick, with Skiddaw protectively forming the distant backdrop.

As it is right in the centre of things, there is no shortage of accommodation options for ascents of Glaramara in Borrowdale, Langdale and Wasdale. Although not as serious as the Scafells, winter conditions can make the mountain dangerous for those not equipped with mountaineering tools.

    Hiking

Topped with wonderful, scrambly ground, Glaramara is the highest point of a rocky ridge of seemingly never-ending undulations dividing Langstrath Valley from the head of Borrowdale. Its twin summits, both encircled by crags, are stony platforms with views of ‘unsurpassed beauty’ over Borrowdale, as Wainwright put it.

    Hiking

Glaramara may win the prize for the Wainwright fell with the most unusual name. A challenging approach for most walkers (especially in poor weather), its position in the centre of the National Park means the views from the summit are exceptional from all angles.
