Created in the middle of the 18th century for Friedrich II as a collection of paintings, it is the "first independent museum building on German soil" (see: potsdam.de/bildergalerie).

It still houses 140 important paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. For several years the picture gallery was hidden behind fences and you could only see it through the surrounding wall; now it shines again from the outside in its old splendor.

Inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List

The entry of the Potsdam palaces and gardens into the UNESCO World Heritage List had been requested by the German Democratic Republic on 29 September 1989. For its part, the Federal Republic of Germany proposed on 14 June 1990 the part of the Havel landscape with the castle and gardens in Glienicke and the Pfaueninsel for registration.

On December 12, 1990, just two months after the reunification of the two German states, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO at its meeting in Banff, Canada included the "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin" in the list of World Heritage number 532 C (Cultural Property / Culture).
