Sections that were less threatened were secured by "hacking", i.e. the forests were cut down in wide swathes and the tree trunks were stacked on top of each other. However, it proved necessary to provide large sections of the 86 km long defensive lines with redoubts, which were preceded by a hack. It is very impressive to see the distance over which the Eppingen Lines were secured.
