A round of home before dinner: dry and pleasant temperatures entice us behind the stove. A little hike before eating. From Wallersdorf it goes over the popularly known Promilleweg, to Grebenau. Past the city administration and retirement home in the direction of Bornwiesenweg, a residential area of Grebenau. We leave the town in the direction of the Warthügel, which lies in front of us with its 383 meters of altitude. Not far from it is the Kupp, a basalt rock cone that was formed about 65 million years ago (long before my time). A basalt breakthrough in a red sandstone area. The height is given as 366 meters. It is protected by trees and surrounded by the villages of Bieben, Reimenrod, Eulersdorf, Merlos and Grebenau in the Vogelsberg district. The way back leads via Merlos in the direction of Wallersdorf on a field path that also crosses Borgmanweg, Hessenweg 11 or Brüder-Grimm-Weg and Lutherweg 1521. These lead to Herzberg Castle, which is only a few kilometers away.

A short walk to the zoo and climbing forest. A highlight is the roaring stag that wants to impress its ladies. Lots of wild boars waiting for food. Next door is the climbing forest, which is well attended. A rope is stretched across the valley; the brave can be accelerated by gravity here at a lofty height. Archers or those who want to become one practice on a meadow in the upper valley. In addition to coffee and cake, there is also an event, namely a Segway Parkour.

Visit the Point Alpha memorial and up to the Soisbergturm: nice weather was announced with fog in the morning hours. What do you do in fog? We visit the special exhibition 70 years in service from the Federal Border Guard to the Federal Police at the Point Alpha memorial. When you arrive at the parking lot of the former US camp you have a view of the death strip, to the right of it an observation tower of the Western powers, on the opposite side the tower of the GDR border troops, slightly offset. The monument to the division and reunification of Germany is not far from the two contemporary witnesses. Here NATO and the Warsaw Pact faced each other. The use of nuclear weapons in an emergency was planned on both sides. A visit to this historical site is recommended, reports from contemporary witnesses, the life of the US soldiers and everyday military life can be seen here in exhibitions. After the tour of the memorial, the sun drove away the fog with its power. We start by bike in the direction of the Soisbergturm, the crown of the king of the Hessian skittles. At 630 meters in altitude, the Soisberg is the highest mountain in the Hessian skittles and belongs to the Kuppenrhön. It consists of sandstone with basalt breakthroughs and is located in the districts of Hersfeld Rotenburg and Fulda. With its 111 steps, the tower is almost 25 meters high. The inauguration of the tower was its predecessor in 2004, in 1895 it was only 8 meters high, in 1955 it was a little higher at 13.5 meters. In good weather the view is terrific. The return journey leads via Mansbach to Wenigentaft and Buttlar to Borsch. Shortly before Borsch, a bike and hiking trail leads directly to Point Alpha and offers a great view over Geisa.

Along the Jossa and Fulda: The river Jossa arises below the Steinberg (494 meters above sea level) near Willofs from three small brooks at 393 meters above sea level. It flows first from Willofs (district of Schlitz Vogelsbergkreis) in a northerly direction into the Gründchen. She passes Udenhausen, Grebenau and Wallersdorf before she leaves the Vogelsbergkreis. This is also where our tour begins, we ride parallel to the Jossa on field and forest paths in the direction of Steinberg in the Lauterbacher Forest, into the area where the Jossa originated. From here you go to Schlitz to get to the mouth of the Jossa, the Fulda. At Hutzdorf, also a district of Schlitz, we meet the Fulda, which also flows in a northerly direction past Sandlofs, Queck, Rimbach, Unter Schwarz, Ober-Wegfurth and finally Unter-Wegfurth. We follow it on the well-developed Fulda cycle path to the mouth of the Jossa. At Niederjossa, very close to the crossroads (R1 Fuldaradweg and R7), the Jossa joins after just under 23 kilometers at 210 m above sea level. NN. In the Fulda in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. On her way she gets company from four tributaries that are no longer than 7.5 kilometers. The Eschelbach, the Schwarza, the Bieben and the Breitenbach. On the R7 we drive along the Jossa, past Niederjossa and Oberjossa as well as Breitenbach and come to Hatterode, here between Hatterode and Wallersdorf the district border between Vogelsbergkreis and Hersfeld-Rotenburg runs, which is of course irrelevant for the river. From the origin to the mouth of the Jossa there is a difference in altitude of 183 meters, in its further course only the Fulda and Weser are left to the North Sea near Bremerhaven.
We have already ridden this tour and were on the road for several days, a great experience.

Up on the Meißner: The Hohe Meißner is one of the low mountain ranges in Hesse, with its 753 meters it is part of the North Hessian Werra-Meißner district. A destination for many nature lovers near the small town of Hessisch Lichtenau. From here we also start our tour, a cycle path called Meißner-Rundweg leads us via Walburg to Velmenden an Hausen to the transmitter mast of the Hessischer Rundfunk at an altitude of 710 meters. The Meißner circular route, with its 83 kilometers, is part of the Herkules Wartburg cycle path, just like the Werra valley cycle path. In addition to the three transmission masts, one of the highlights is also a "Church in the Green", which is located opposite the former Hoher Meißner restaurant. From the terrace you have a great view over the low mountain range. You continue through the Frau-Holle-Land nature park to Kalbesee, a former open-cast mine (basalt quarry) right next to the Kalbe basalt knoll of the same name with an altitude of 719 meters. On the whole tour there are some shelters and a lot of benches along the way, these are sponsored by the Lions Club. The next destination is the Frau-Holle-Teich, the mountain depression lying at 650 meters was dedicated to Frau Holle and is enclosed on three sides by steeply rising block heaps. This pond is fed by a 9 degree cold underground spring. The name Hollenteich has been documented in writing since 1641 and probably goes back to a pre-Christian cult site. At the Kasseler hut a break is announced, very close is the Kasseler Kuppe, it is the highest point with 753 meters of altitude of the Meißner. Its varied geology is home to a great diversity of species. Rare plants, arnica and orchid grow here that can only thrive on the right subsoil. The variety of rocks with pentagonal and hexagonal basalt columns have helped the Meißner, among other things, to the title of Geo-Nature Park. With the descent towards Weißbach and on to Laudenbach, we leave the heights of the Frau-Holle-Land, which has many premium hiking trails and bike paths for all nature lovers. Back in Hessisch Lichtenau with approx. 12,500 inhabitants, we still admire the old town with its half-timbered houses, after a visit to the “Cafe in the Brewery‘ ‘we start our journey home.

Rhön Tour: Enzian Hut, Milseburg: We start at Götzenhof near Fulda, it's about 25 kilometers to our first destination, 17 of which we drive on the Milseburgradweg. There are some villages along the route, Almendorf, Wiesen, Niederbieber, Langenbieber and Elters. Those familiar with the area actually see Bieberstein Castle from the start, it is located at around 500 meters above sea level on the Kugelberg and accompanies us on the entire tour. A visit to this castle, which houses a boarding school, is definitely recommended. The view from the castle over the Rhön is excellent. We are now driving into the 1172-meter-long Milseburg tunnel, the former railway tunnel was part of the Götzenhof - Wüstensachsen railway line. In 2003 the route was converted into a cycle path, the tunnel was equipped with lighting so that it could be used by cyclists and pedestrians. In the months of November to mid-April, the tunnel is a resting place for bats and is therefore closed to use, a diversion route is signposted. Arrived at the former Milseburg train station, we leave the cycle path in the direction of Oberbernhards. Continue on the Hochrhönrig to the Danzwiesen intersection, a district of Hofbieber, from here past the Milsburg through meadows and a wooded area to the Grabenhöfchen. Known as a restaurant and hotel, starting point for hikes and bike tours. Not far from here is the Enzian Hut, our destination for lunch. From the Grabenhöfchen we drive in the direction of Abtsroda, a gravel path with a water deflector, at the level of the Weiherberg we then turn left to the Enzian hut. The hut, located at 760 meters above sea level, is a highlight for hikers and bikers, good food and friendly service, great views over the country and on many days you will be pampered by the sun on the terrace. After dinner we drive back to Danzwiesen, now a steep ascent to the summit of the Milseburg is the order of the day. Coarse stones and a few roots shape the way up. Unfortunately, there is still no agreement on the construction of the Milseburghütte and therefore there is currently no catering on the mountain of the same name. The highlight here at the top, at 835 meters above sea level, is the St. Gangolf pilgrimage chapel, it was first mentioned in 1493 and is located below the three summit crosses. The descent to the Danzwiesen car park is done carefully, from here we let it roll to Langenbieber. After a short coffee break, continue to the Götzenhof starting point. Summary: The Rhön is always worth a trip.

Komootler meeting in historical walls: It took almost a quarter of a year from the idea to the meeting. Once, with so many rejections, I thought whether the shot would backfire. But as I could see, it was worth it to persevere. After consultation with the landlords, the invitation could be published. The joy of such a meeting was great for many Komoot members, they were excited about one or the other whose tours they had already followed on Komoot. The day has come, on Hesse's largest hilltop castle, in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, in walls that are over 700 years old. The beer garden of the castle complex, which has an altitude of over 500 meters, was the meeting point. Little by little the participants arrived, Aschaffenburg and Göttingen are the longest journeys, from the Schwalm and the Rhön you have come by bike, just sporty. It was a great atmosphere, you quickly got into conversation, as if you had known each other forever. The ambience of the castle has of course also contributed to this, so the little rain showers in between could not disturb us. For the physical well-being, the Burgschänke team took care of delicious meals and cool drinks ensured well-being. To commemorate the meeting, a group photo was taken on the stairs to the central castle. A visit to the castle complex with its highlights of the castle chapel, knight's hall, the residential tower and other vaults was then possible. The mood was good, meanwhile the sun had also taken its permanent place, in the end there were 21 Komootler who accepted the invitation. The sun wanted to end its course and was already disappearing behind the walls when the last of them started their journey home. It was a nice day, a nice group of people, just great. We will do it again!

Rotkäppchenland: To avoid the country road, we drive from Wallersdorf to Breitenbach on parallel field paths. At the stone mill we meet the R7 and R11 at Niederjossa, the R1 is added, we follow it to Niederaula. This is where the Rotkäppchenland cycle path begins, which is currently closed due to the expansion of fiber optics. To the left of the auditorium, we drive a well-developed forest path to Kleba, at the entrance to the village there is a war memorial. A huge oak stands here for the fallen, surrounded by a stone wall. It is now only a stone's throw to Kirchheim, at Kaffee Nolte (town center) we enjoy pastries from the fine bakery and the sun. This is followed by the villages of Heddersdorf, Frielingen, Gersdorf, Wahlshausen, Oberaula and Hausen. The bike path stretches from town to town with a slight incline, from Wahlshausen the old railway line is back in fashion. Wonderful landscapes, the Eisenberg with its tower towers over from the right and the sun sets the Aula valley in the limelight. At the highest point there is a small beer garden, snack bar or kiosk whatever you like to call it. Up here in Olberode, I've been passing by on my tours for years and have always been well served. In the beginning there were delicious Black Forests for 2, - €, the offer got bigger over the years and the nice operator became more and more famous. Today was another day where you could feel the popularity. Our onward journey takes us from approx. 420 meters in altitude via Weißenborn to Görtzhain downhill to 340 meters. Here we leave the cycle path and take the country road towards Lingelbach. After the underpass of the A5, we turn left into a forest path, which takes us directly to Bieben after crossing the federal road 62. This is followed by the village of Merlos, which is connected to Wallersdorf by a dirt road, the path is also part of a signposted mountain bike tour and is therefore often used.
A wonderful tour with almost 50 kilometers and 470 meters in altitude, plus a lot of rest stops. A highlight for cyclists
