The first stage of the Querweg Freiburg-Bodensee takes you from Freiburg, the unofficial capital of the Black Forest, through wide valleys to the tranquil Buchenbach. Today there are still some kilometers on paved roads and dirt roads - a perfect start for a multi-day hike.Your trip to the Swabian Sea begins appropriately at the Schwabentor in Freiburg im Breisgau. From here it goes first in serpentines up to the Ludwigshöhe, which offers you a great view of the city. After saying goodbye to beautiful Freiburg, you walk along wide forest trails along the slopes of the Schlossberg. The path winds through the forest and leads you evenly up to the pilgrimage site of St. Ottilien. After a visit to the ancient chapel worth a stop in the same forest inn. Afterwards it goes quite steeply up to the small Rosskopf, the highest point of today's stage. From the wooded hilltop the trail leads in some hairpin bends down into the sprawling Dreisamtal. At the edge of the forest below the ridge, you wander through the valley and enjoy the view over meadows and fields. The path runs roughly parallel to the Eschbach, a tributary of the Dreisam. Shortly before Stegen you cross the stream and then walk through the village. Several cafes are perfect for a break. After a refreshing walk, you will hike along Wagensteinbach, a tributary of the Dreisam, to Burg am Wald. Below the wooded slopes of the Black Forest, it's a bit over meadows, until you reach Buchenbach, your destination today.
