Wasdale Head Inn

Highlight • Pub

The Wasdale Head Inn is known to be the spiritual home of British climbing. From here the first pivotal climbing expeditions into the Lakes crags took place during the 'golden era' of British climbing.

As a walkers inn the pub has a drying room, useful for those soggy expeditions!

Yewbarrow

Highlight • Summit

This is the fourth Wasdale peak on our Trail 100 list, but despite being the lowest, Yewbarrow is more than a match for its neighbours. Taking the form of an upturned ship’s hull, the mountain is steep sided, intricately craggy at either end, with a long, drawn out summit that opens up some of the best scenery in the Lakes.

Red Pike (Wasdale)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Red Pike is a 2,710-foot (826 m) mountain in the Western Lake District that sits between Yewbarrow to the south and Scoat Fell to the north. It falls along the classic Mosedale Horseshoe - a brilliant hill walking route from Wasdale. I visited in May 2021 when there was snow on the ground.

Steeple (Lake District National Park)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Steeple is, in effect, the rocky apex of Scoat Fell's north ridge. Its summit is an exciting platform overlooking wild Ennerdale. An ascent of the ridge via Long Crag is one of the most wonderful in the national park.

Pillar Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

This broad, flat summit is wonderfully situated above the increasingly wild valley of Ennerdale to the north and Mosedale, the remote offshoot of Wasdale, to the south. As such the scenery is nothing short of spectacular, including the monolithic seen-but-not-touched Pillar Rock, whose own compact summit is the realm of steely sinewed climbers only.

Kirk Fell Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Kirk Fell is one of Alfred Wainwright's 214 fells of Lakeland. The summit offers brilliant views down Wasdale to Wast Water, but my favourite view from here has to be towards the unmistakable profile of Great Gable.

I've once hiked 'up the nose' of Kirk Fell, a relentless steep walk from the valley at Wasdale Head to the summit at 2,631 feet (802 m). Many people say you should try it just the once, but you'll probably never do it again. You'd probably need a knee replacement if you decided to descend that way!
