View of Störmthaler Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have a great view of the Störmthaler See. It's hard to believe that it was created by flooding an opencast mine. The flooding was finished in 2012 and today it has good bathing water quality. On the lake you can see the floating art object "Vineta": It is reminiscent of the church in Magdeborn, which was dredged for opencast lignite mining.

Lake Markkleeberg

Highlight • Lake

The Markkleeberger lake originated from the former open pit as Espenhain. Between 1939 and 1994 lignite was mined here. After completion of the coal mining began in 1999, the flooding of the lake. The final stand has been reached at +113.0 m asl, so that the Markkleeberg Lake could be handed over to the public on 15.07.2006.

The varied circular route around the lake is ideal for hiking, cycling or a Segwaytour. There are cafés and restaurants on the lakeside promenade.

In 2013, the Kanuparkschleuse was completed. Thus, the Markkleeberger See is connected by an 800 m long canal passage with the neighboring Störmthaler See.

One of many lakes in Neuseenland!
Cruise on the same is nice with a detour to Störmthaler through the lock. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Strandbad Markkleeberg Ost, also called Markkleeberger beach, is a very popular beach for bathing friends from Leipzig and Markkleeberg. In the immediate vicinity is a paid parking, which is also controlled by coaches with many visitors. The beach itself is characterized by fine sand and lawns. The season is busy here. Therefore, one should strive at peak times further east towards Wachau beach. The effort will be rewarded with more space and peace! At the beach there is a fish stall, which offers delicious fish snacks. You can also just buy a coffee and then biking around the lake for about nine kilometers. Beautiful beach, clear water, shady trees on the lawn included.

July 7, 2024,4 See'n 🚴🏻‍♂️Tour im Leipz. Neuseenland😎🌞🏊🏼‍♂️🌊✅️🔝💯
It couldn't have been more beautiful. Sunday's bike tour 🚴🏻‍♂️ around 4 lakes in Leipzig's New Lake District🌊🌞😎.
Thank you @R🟡nny〽️ for your encouragement for this super nice tour. It was a few more "kilometres" but it's still quite easy to cycle around the lakes. With my "pain therapy" well adjusted, I can manage the
bike tour 🚴🏻‍♂️✅️ even with …

Very nice, relaxed tour - great to drive - you don't just have to take the asphalt - there are wonderful paths along the water, ideal for MTB 😃🚵 - by the way, my Petra couldn't manage the huge portion of currywurst 😉

I usually do my tours very early, but not this time. I left a little later to capture the spooky feeling in Leipzig. I was lucky; the WGT was in full swing at the Agra exhibition grounds. Crowds of people dressed in costumes and very, very black suddenly surrounded me. Despite this, I was able to continue my tour without …

...was supposed to be a family round, but the rest of the group wanted to "dally around" a bit! That wasn't really my thing...so dad abseiled off and did a single round... 😁🍻

It was a lovely tour with @Wolle 🥾🚴‍♂️🚵 in Leipzig's New Lake District! The weather was fantastic🌞 and it's amazing what the open-cast mines have become!

Bike and Swim 🤩
The 4 Lakes Loop – Störmthal, Markkleeberg, Cospuden, and Zwenkau – mostly follows paved paths. However, if you want direct lake views and access to beautiful swimming spots, you'll have to cycle along narrow paths right along the shore. However, you have to be careful not to enter the restricted area.
