Really very nice view of Freiburg. The new SC Freiburg Stadium can be seen slightly to the right. :-)

A circular path lined with interesting wooden sculptures stretches high above the treetops at the summit of the Schauinsland. In the direction of the Rappenecker Hütte you come to this sculpture trail.

Right at the beginning the impressive sculpture "360 degrees dream time" is enthroned. The artist and sculptor Thomas Rees from Kappel has transformed the trunk of a mighty silver fir into a mystical figure. The silver fir stood in the Freiburg city forest for over 100 years, the dry summer of 2003 hit it so hard that it dried up and had to be felled three years later. Rees has carved an impressive face into the hollow lower part of the trunk. You can sit protected like in a wing chair and dream. Not only the magnificent view from up here, but also the individual works of art, including the high wind drill, also designed by Thomas Rees, invite you to linger on the signposted path again and again. "The interplay of place, history and material determines the shape of my works, which invite you to feel, look, walk through and experience," says Rees, whose sculptures are often created intuitively and spontaneously. The 1,284 meter high Schauinsland is a popular destination in the Black Forest. About 15 kilometers from Feiburg, it can be reached quickly by car or the Schauinsland cable car, which overcomes around 750 meters in altitude. It takes about an hour for the well-developed circular route to the summit.

Schauinsland Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Over 85 steps you reach the 22 meter high viewing platform of the Schauinsland Tower, actually called "Eugen-Keidel Tower". In good weather you can look into the Vosges and the Swiss Alps. The tower is always open.

Very nice cable car, in winter even blankets are provided. The Schauinsland cable car can also be used free of charge in combination with the 3-day welcome ticket from Deutsche Bahn (for Freiburg).

Freiburg, the sunny Black Forest metropolis, the 'capital of the Black Forest', is located in the border triangle with France and Switzerland. With over 200,000 inhabitants, including around 30,000 students, Freiburg offers a wide range of cultural activities, various theaters, concerts, museums and historical buildings. The Black Forest is still right on the doorstep, for example with a cable car …

With the cable car, from Freiburg, up into the Schauinsland.
Magnificent view, small round!

Not on the bike today. We really wanted to take the longest cable car in Germany to the second highest mountain in the Black Forest. At 1284 m altitude we took a short walk and enjoyed the great views.

Freiburg's local mountain was still missing from my collection. Unfortunately, the tower was closed, but the views were still magnificent: I had never had such a great view of the Vosges and the Feldberg. The round trip turned out to be quite small, which was not due to the hiking trails, but rather because I had exhausted myself quite a …

Today we rode Germany's longest cable car. Once at the top, we walked to the summit of the Schauinsland and climbed the tower. The weather was not ideal, partly clouds and it was extremely humid and warm. The view from the tower is still great.

Wonderful Sunday walk on the Schauinsland. The sculpture trail is really worth it, and even more so when the Schauinsland Tower is accessible again.

It's a nice, relatively easy trail. (Even people wearing flip-flops can do it!) The one star deducted is for the inadequate signage. Large sign at the mountain station with 6 interesting, beautiful tours up to 10 km long. All numbered on the sign. That's it. After that, there are no indications of the course of the circular trails. Very careless! …

1.) The Schauinsland.
Unfortunately, the longest gondola cable car in Germany was out of service due to maintenance work, so we drove up by car. 😁
And from the top we had a magnificent view.
Even the snow-covered Alps could be seen well.
