View of the Dänische Wiek

Highlight • Beach

The view of and over the Danish Wieck fascinated and inspired Caspar David Friedrich. This is where the 12th station of the Caspar David Friedrich Picture Trail is located.
In addition to the beautiful view over the Wieck and across to Ludwigsburg, there is a beautiful little beach (the Eldena lido).

The Greifswald barrage is located in the cross-section of the Ryck federal waterway at the confluence with the "Dänische Wiek" in the Greifswald-Wieck district. It forms an integral part of the flood protection system for the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald. The approximately four meter deep Ryck has a width of approximately 60 meters and serves as an entrance to the city harbor of Greifswald. The main purpose of the largest technical coastal protection structure on the German Baltic Sea coast is to protect against flooding during storm floods, taking into account the conservation of the brackish water-dependent biotopes in the Ryck lowlands. A building was developed which is optimal in the area of tension between security, functionality, urban perception and costs. The barrage was inaugurated and put into operation on April 27, 2016.

Wieck Hand-operated Drawbridge

Highlight • Bridge

This bascule bridge leads over the Ryck River and connects the two Greifswald districts of Eldena and Wieck. It was inaugurated in 1887 and is now one of the oldest still existing and functioning wooden bascule bridges. You can rightly call it a landmark of Greifswald or Wieck. The residents of the Eldena side do not like to hear it at all when Wieck is always mentioned, although Eldena should also be mentioned.

Fun fact: several times a year there are motorists who ignore the bollard signs, want to drive quickly afterwards and wreck their car. The bollard is just very stable. :)

Here the Ryck flows into the Bodden. In front of here you can easily watch incoming and outgoing ships.

The Hamburg sculptor Johannes Speder made the three wooden heads during the first international wood sculpture symposium in Greifswald in 1996. The artists' meeting was organized by the Wieck sculptor Heinrich Zenichowski.
Two years later, the Hanseatic city of Greifswald bought the three-part work and had it installed on the sculpture path in Wieck. “The Three Wise Men”, which initially shone in the colors white, yellow and blue, became the trademark of the pier.
But over the years the sculptures deteriorated and eventually fell into disrepair. Now their creator has restored the wooden heads. Speder cleaned the sculptures, repaired damaged areas and finally oiled them to protect them from the weather. Today the work on the “Utkiek” restaurant is presented in a natural wooden outfit.

August 20, 2021,Wanderung von Eldena nach Wieck und zurück 🚶🌻🌦️☔
Today we went hiking a little on shoemaker's pony. The tour starts from Eldena at the monastery ruin of the same name, and continues on well-developed footpaths and smaller trails to the bathing bay. From here you have a nice view of the Danish Wiek. We continue to the Ryck River, where the historic bascule bridge is located next to …

Wieck is a former fishing village and a district of the Hanseatic and university town of Greifswald. Around 500 people live here. The best-known landmark of the more than 800-year-old town is the Wieck bascule bridge.

The district of Eldena, the cradle of Greifswald, is very close by. Here at the mouth of the Ryck, Cistercian monks settled in 1199 …

we needed to see and experience something different, a lot of serious illness and now also death (sister) and necessary artificial coma due to serious illness (one of my nephews) in our large family at the moment.

So once again we need to sort out our thoughts and feelings and deal with life and the end of life.
