Lake Templin was named after the village of Templin on its eastern shore and has no connection to the town of Templin in northern Brandenburg, which is called Templiner Stadtsee (Templin Town Lake).
Lake Templin lies mostly within the southwestern city limits of Potsdam, with a portion in the south belonging to the municipality of Schwielowsee (Caputh district).
