The mill is a meadow mill that was built in 1866, to drain the Kerkepolder. This was a polder of approximately 17 ha., which was owned by the Dutch Reformed Church of Wognum. When in 1948 the excess water could be drained by means of a culvert under the Zomerdijk, the polder ceased to exist and the mill became redundant. In 1979 it was transferred to the Stichting De Westfriese Molens. The Kerkepolder is now owned by the Landschap Noord-Holland foundation, which wants to raise the water level in the polder. The mill then hardly has a function anymore. Previously, the mill lifted the water by means of a screw; nowadays this is done with a fan pump.
