Very quiet and in May many birds breeding there

In the north of Het Twiske you will find convenient parking spaces, which are ideal to start your walk. Here you can step straight out of the car into the quiet, green landscape, with wide grass paths, watery areas and vast reed fields. Perfect for those who want to get straight into nature without the crowds, and wonderful to enjoy the wide views and bird sounds.

The Ilperveld is a water-rich nature reserve full of reed beds, marshes and countless ditches. You cannot walk freely in the Ilperveld: the area consists of vulnerable marsh and peat lands that are largely only accessible by canoe or whisper boat. There are a few boardwalks and small viewpoints on the edge, but otherwise the landscape is mainly admired from the water or via organised excursions. This protected nature reserve is a perfect place to experience the special flora and fauna up close in peace and quiet.

Great area to walk

An iconic polder mill in the nature reserve Het Twiske, surrounded by water, meadows and reed fields. The Twiskemolen is still in operation and contributes to the management of the water level in the area. A beautiful piece of Dutch heritage, perfect as a stopover during a walk or bike ride.

Traditional Dutch picture! This mill has been on this site since 1974. In 2016 the mill was hit by a storm.

A wonderfully varied path through watery nature, where you often encounter cows. Beautiful in every season.

The Twiskemolen is a monumental windmill combined with an electric pumping station that drains the 650-hectare Twiskepolder. Among the many old windmill types in the Netherlands, the Twiskemolen is an octagonal, thatched indoor windmill. The mill has been in its current location on the border between the municipalities of Landsmeer and Oostzaan since 1975. The Twiskemolen is one of the few polder mills in the Netherlands that are still in operation. The miller tries as much as possible (on a voluntary basis) to keep the water level in the Twiskepolder at the required level with the help of the wind. Using a worm pump, the mill lifts the water between 20 and 60 m³ per minute one and a half meters to the other side of the dyke. The displaced water finally reaches the sea via the Zuidwestplas (= the reservoir) via the North Sea Canal. The mill is occupied by the miller.
