Contrary to popular belief, the seven crosses do not refer to the clashes on Pasubio, but rather to seven farmers who killed each other over grazing issues in the pre-war era.

The first plans for the construction of a refuge on Pasubio date back to 1907. However, they were not realized until after the First World War, when the Schio section of the CAI began to build a refuge in memory of the soldiers who had fallen on Pasubio. It was in this very place, on July 10, 1916, that Lieutenant Cesare Battisti and Second Lieutenant Fabio Filzi, irredentists from Trentino, were captured by Austro-Hungarian soldiers: the two, in an attempt to conquer the peak together with a handful of infantrymen, were taken prisoner and taken to Trento, where two days later they were summarily tried and hanged in the courtyard of the Buonconsiglio Castle, for high treason. The rocky promontory, known during the conflict as 'Corno di Vallarsa', was renamed 'Corno Battisti' after the war, in memory of the historical figure who still arouses divisive thoughts: contextualized in the historical period, on the Austro-Hungarian side he was a traitor, while on the Italian side he was a patriot (and glorified for this in the fascist era). https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Battisti https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabio_Filzi https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irredentismo_italiano

Tradition has it that the Seven Crosses were placed in memory of an ancient feud in the 15th century between shepherds, who bitterly fought over the meager pastures of the Pasubio massif: in a violent fight that broke out between seven herdsmen, six were killed; the last, desperate in front of the lifeless bodies of the others, took his own life. They were buried on the spot where they had died. The Seven Crosses do not therefore refer to war episodes of the Great War, despite being located in the middle of a combat zone, close to the Dente Italiano and the Dente Austriaco: here in particular on 2 July 1916, during the Strafexpedition, the imperial Kaiserjäger broke through and broke through the enemy lines, reaching the point of maximum penetration into the Pasubio.

I arrive near the refuge in the middle of the night. Sweaty, I have to wear something heavy for the temperature and the wind. But then ... there is no greater satisfaction than taking out of the backpack sandwiches, cold cuts and drinks to enjoy in silence under a magnificent starry sky, even in the absence of the moon 🌑😁

Beautiful route, but I recommend doing it with a MTB, even better if an e-bike and not with a Gravel bike. Unfortunately, the surface of the forest road both before and after the Lancia refuge, due to the heavy rains of spring 2024, is very loose and irregular which, combined with the slope, is impossible to do by pedaling. For the rest, the landscape is like a postcard and even if you walk a bit carrying your bike, it is worth it. Beautiful tour.
