The almost 6 km² Hallig Hooge is one of the 7 inhabited Hallig islands (out of a total of 10) in the German North Sea. From the mainland, all you can see are the terps, small mounds on which the houses of the Hallig inhabitants stand, as if floating in the North Sea. Every spring and autumn, the salt marshes provide feeding and resting grounds for thousands of migratory birds. It is an incredible spectacle when the brent geese take flight in huge, cloud-like flocks, making a loud noise. The Hallig also has a lot to offer human visitors. You can take amazingly long hikes on the Hallig and in the mudflats, sample Frisian specialties on the Hanswarft and Backenswarft, and even go swimming in some places. Here you will find pure relaxation.

Anyone arriving in Amrum by boat arrives at the ferry dock in Wittdün. The only port on Amrum for ferry and freight traffic is in Wittdün. The Wittdün ferry dock is a hive of activity when the WDR ships and excursion boats arrive or depart. Cars and trucks line up next to each other to be processed for the crossing.

Hooge is the most inhabited and most visited Hallig in the North Sea. Its name means "high" Hallig and since it is also surrounded by a small summer dike, there is only "land under water" here two or three times a year. Hallig Hooge, a small island that is surrounded and sometimes even flooded by the North Sea. During such a "land under water" only the mounds protrude from the water. They are artificially raised mounds of earth on which the houses of the Hallig residents were built. Although Hallig Hooge has a so-called summer dike, it is flooded when the water level is around 1.50 meters above the mean high tide. Whether camping, holiday home, holiday apartment, group accommodation, guest house or hotel; everyone will find suitable accommodation on Hallig Hooge. Many of the holiday accommodations here are just a stone's throw from the sea and offer a view of the unique landscape of the beautiful Hallig. https://www.nordseetourismus.de/hooge

The Pellworm lighthouse can be seen from all parts of the island. What can you experience during a viewing? View from a height of 37m from the platform of the Pellworm lighthouse over the island and the Halligen. The Pellworm registry office is located on the top deck of the lighthouse. During the tour it was very interesting to hear what material the lighthouse is made from, segments from Switzerland and Italy. This steel was previously used in tunnel construction. It has been standing since 1907. The tower can therefore sway slightly and can withstand the storms. It is also significantly lighter than concrete towers. It stands on 137 oak posts. Inside the tower there are electrical dehumidification devices that prevent rust in the tower caused by “condensation water” running down and thus keep the steel dry. Pellworm is said to have a surplus of electricity that cannot be dissipated. You can only take a tour of the Pellworm lighthouse with a guided tour by the lighthouse keeper. You should have booked a viewing appointment in good time and picked up the tickets at the tourist office in Tammensiel in advance, as only a maximum of 10 people can take part in one appointment. For us, as a latecomer, the booking just worked out without picking up the tickets. You can find everything else at https://www.pellworm.de/aktivitaeten/leuchtturm/
