The Hofburg was formerly the seat of the Brixen bishops and is now open to the public. The diocese archives and two museums are located there.

Built by the Brixen prince bishops in the 13th century and then repeatedly rebuilt. Today it shines in the baroque style and includes a museum.

        Hofburg Brixen
The Brixen Hofburg can look back on a long history. Built in the distant year 1250 as the residence of the prince-bishops of Brixen, it served as a bishop's seat until 1964. The inner courtyard with the courtyard gate, the Renaissance loggias and the closed Baroque facades is in itself an unforgettable sight. Today the Hofburg also houses the diocesan museum, the cathedral treasury and a nativity scene museum. The original goal of the Diocesan Museum, which opened in 1901, was to collect endangered Romanesque and Gothic works of art.
