The name of the small town is derived from the Slavic word Prilep, "appendage". This refers to a district (belonging to Rudolstadt since 1997) in a nest location. Wine was grown here for many years due to its favorable location. The church "St. Veit", whose late Romanesque holy water kettle is exhibited in the Saalfeld City Museum, is well worth seeing.
