Levadas are artificial watercourses on the Portuguese island of Madeira, used to channel water from the wetter areas of the north and center of the island to the agricultural areas of the south. Since long distances have to be covered in some cases, the majority of the levadas run with only a very slight gradient. In return, these waterways overcome valleys and mountains, traverse tunnels, cross natural watercourses and also lead over bridges.
