The Gendarmstien is one of the few long-distance hiking trails in Denmark that run close to the coast. Therefore, it is one of Denmark's most attractive and scenic hiking trails. It runs from Padborg to Høruphav on a distance of almost 75 km. Along the way, from 1920 to 1958, the Danish border guards patrolled, guarding the Danish border day and night and supervising shipping between Germany and Denmark on the Flensburg Fjord. In 1920, a referendum North Schleswig was reunited with Denmark, so that the border shifted to the north side of the fjord. From 1958, the Danish police took over the surveillance of the border. In 1988 Sønderjylland recognized the tourist potential of this old route and began marking the old route with signs and information panels. What a wise decision. Meanwhile, there are also so-called "primitive" places in nature and various other accommodation offers, so that a multi-day hike is nothing in the way. On the Internet you can inform yourself about the route and a hiking guide with further historical information is available for download.

The location of South Jutland as a border region makes this part of the country something special, not least in the light of history. After reunification in 1920 the border and shipping were monitored by the border gendarmes. The patrols took place on foot along the coast and each gendarme had to check a specific section of the border. The Gendarme Path - the five stages
