The small, remote Hesselbach surrounded by forests was a well-known and much-visited place of pilgrimage in earlier centuries. The district lies on a high plateau (approx. 500 m above sea level). When Emperor Heinrich II gave the bishopric of Worms the wild ban east of the Euterbach and Itterbach in 1011, this area was a barely developed forest mark. In the middle of the 11th century, the Amorbach monastery was able to acquire the Worms property. However, one must not assume that this was the beginning of settlement in Hesselbach. Hessenbach was first mentioned in a document on November 13, 1334, when Irmengard von Auerbach (Elztal) sold her share of the Wolzin estate in Hesselbach to the Amorbach monastery.
