Sein Großvater – ein ehemaliger Förster – nahm ihn oft mit in den Wald. Dort lernte er nicht nur, wie man eine Karte liest oder den Wind deutet, sondern auch Respekt vor allem, was lebt.
Nach der Schule zog es ihn zunächst in die Stadt, doch das Betonlabyrinth fühlte sich nie richtig an. Stattdessen absolvierte er eine Ausbildung in Naturpädagogik, kehrte zurück ins Münsterland und begann, geführte Wanderungen durch Wälder, Wiesen und Moorlandschaften zu organisieren.
Er wurde schnell bekannt – nicht nur für sein tiefes Wissen über Pflanzen, Tiere und alte Geschichten, sondern auch für seine ruhige Art, mit der er Menschen aller Altersgruppen begeisterte. Kinder nannten ihn liebevoll „den Baumflüsterer“. Erwachsene fühlten sich nach seinen Touren oft wie nach einem Kurzurlaub für die Seele.
