Hiking Highlight
Here at the reservoir it is wonderfully quiet. In many places you have a beautiful view of the lake and the opposite side of the river.
The Perlenbachtalsperre is located near Monschau in the Aachen region in North Rhine-Westphalia. On the west side of the lake is the federal highway 399, while on the east side of a hiking trail from the dam to the Höfener mill runs. The building dams the Perlenbach and serves the drinking water supply as well as the power generation by hydropower. The dam was completed in 1956 and is operated by the Wasserversorgungszweckverband Perlenbach.

The Perlenbachtalsperre was built between 1953 and 1956 as a drinking water dam with a capacity of approx. 800,000 m³. The rock embankment dam has a length of approx. 120 meters and is 18 meters high.
Since 2004 the dam has also been used to generate CO2-free energy. After three years of construction, a hydropower plant was put into operation that generates between 850,000 and 1.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In this way, around 300 households can be supplied with environmentally friendly electricity.

The Perlenbach rises as a Schwalmbach in the High Fens. The source of the brook, which runs entirely in the Hohes Venn-Eifel Nature Park, is in the municipal area of Bütgenbach, four kilometers north of Rocherath-Krinkelt on the Elsenborn military training area at an altitude of around 600 m.
The Schwalmbach flows to the west, changes its direction to the north after about four kilometers. After almost seven kilometers of flowing, it takes the Krockesbach from the right. The name changes, from here the stream is called Perlenbach. After another kilometer, the Jägersief flows from the right. The Perlenbach now marks the border between Belgium and Germany for half a kilometer. In Germany it flows through the nature reserves Perlenbach-Fuhrtsbachtal-Talsystem and Unteres Perlenbachtal with the rock formations of Teufelsley, Engelsley, Bromelsley and Pferdeley. The Perlenbach is dammed west of Höfen between river km 3.8 and 2.3 to the Perlenbachtalsperre.
Finally, the Perlenbach reaches Monschau, where it flows into the Rur Maas tributary coming from the west at an altitude of around 420 m at river km 147.4.
