The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre is a modern visitor center. It is designed to inspire and connect people of all ages with the landscape, heritage, and nature of Northern England.
It features interactive exhibitions on nature, climate, and culture, a panoramic roof terrace with views of the landscape, a café with local products, and a shop featuring regional crafts.
Since July 2025, it has also been home to an impressive art installation around the iconic Sycamore Gap tree, which was felled in 2023. The remaining trunk now serves as a memorial and meeting place.

A great stop along the Hadrian's Wall Cycleway – the Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre serves as a hub for rural life. Here, you will find a laboratory, education centre, and hostel, all geared towards the importance of landscape.

The centre emphasises care for nature and transform how people connect with landscape. Open daily from 9.30am - 6pm, you can visit the landscape exhibition, try local food at the cafe, browse local products and crafts at the shop and gain an insight into the surrounding countryside. I was a bit sad when Twice Brewed YHA clsoed down but this new centre definitely makes up for it. Can highly recommend the huge sausage sandwiches in the caf, but if sausages aren't your thing, they also do really good vegan pasties.

It was closed when we passed by on the Military Road, but we did notice it strikes a dramatic silhouette against the landscape.

Were it open; it would make an excellently placed stop for anyone cycling coast to coast or Hadrian's cycleway.

Here at The Sill you will find a cafe, snacks and drinks, art installations, independent makers and regular craft sessions. It is well worth a visit as you travel through Hadrian's Wall country.
