Milecastle 42 is one of the forts built on Hadrian's Wall during the Roman era. These milecastles placed in intervals of about a Roman mile on the wall. This one is on a well preserved section of the historic monument.

Park your car at the milecastle pub it's a 10min walk from there, well worth a visit magnificent views.

Cawfields Milecastle 42 is situated on a steep slope on one of the highest standing sections of Hadrian’s Wall. Just a 10-minute walk from the car park and there is a picnic site nearby. This impressive milecastle was probably built by the Second Legion to protect the weak spot of Hole Gap.
