In earlier times, many buildings in Anklam were made of wood and clay frameworks. Since this construction method encouraged city fires, more brick buildings were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. The resulting buildings housed apartments and offices on the ground floor and stores for grain and goods on the upper floors.
The only surviving building from this period belonged to the cloth maker Jakob Langenschwager in 1406.
After a fire, the building was restored in 1960 and 2005.
Today the building houses the citizens' hall and the Anklam registry office.
