There is much to discover in this old cemetery, there are numerous old burial places, and a large sandstone obelisk.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the historic cemetery has only been used as a museum park with spacious lawns and trees. There are historic gravestones worth seeing on both the lawns and on the walls. Of the formerly typical crypt houses, only the Baroque Baumgärtner crypt directly behind the Grassi Museum remains today. It was built in 1726 and acquired by the publisher Friedrich Gotthelf Baumgärtner in 1825. The cemetery is famous for its epitaphs, including some heavily weathered Renaissance plaques and epigrams on Baroque gravestones, such as the one on Christoph Schmidt's stone: "Come, death, brother of sleep, come and lead me away - release the rudder of my little ship, bring me to a safe port." The text by an unknown author was set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1726 in his cantata no. 56, the so-called Kreuzstabkantate.
