The Neumarkttor forms the eastern end of the old town. It was built in front of the old gate during the representative expansion of the fortifications when the city was equipped with double gates. The defensive tower in the background still remains of the older inner gate, which is also known as the egg tower because of its egg-shaped floor plan. The area between the walls, which was still undeveloped at the time, was called the Zwinger.
