The Ilmenau River originates south of Uelzen from the confluence of the heathland rivers Gerdau and Stederau. It meanders, more or less steadily, through the diverse landscape until it finally flows into the Elbe River near Hoopte, just outside Hamburg. Over its approximately 90-kilometer course, it passes through towns such as Bad Bevensen, Bienenbüttel, Deutsch Evern, and Lüneburg. North of Lüneburg, the Ilmenau becomes the Ilmenau Canal, and from that point onward, its natural state is only partially preserved.
