Former quarry that nature has reclaimed over time.

The Pfaffenloch quarry, which has been abandoned for decades, and its surrounding areas have developed into an extraordinary refuge for animals and plants due to the long period of untouchedness. Sunny loess and quarry walls, dry grassland, old fruit trees, sloe hedges and ponds can be found in a very small area. Particularly noteworthy are the 370 species of large butterflies found so far, most of which are moths. Many of these species are on the red list of the state of Baden-Württemberg. In 1993, the district office for nature conservation and landscape management put a stop to the bush encroachment in an extensive maintenance campaign and created several new ponds. The ponds get their water mainly from the adjacent Pfaffenloch Cave, which has been renovated and redesigned so that the water that runs off is channeled into the quarry. Due to the warm sheltered location, the quarry and its surroundings offer good shelter for smooth snakes and wall lizards. A special feature of this quarry is also a rare black poplar.

So that the quarry does not overgrow, it is cleared regularly and is also grazed from time to time.
