In 1639, almost all Europeans were expelled from Japan. Only the Dutch were allowed to stay, but their settlement was relocated in 1640/41 from Hirado to Nagasaki. Until 1855, Japan's contacts with the West ran exclusively through this small factoree (Dejima).

In the Edo period, it was almost impossible for foreigners to enter Japan. The artificial island of Dejima, raised off the coast of Nagasaki, was a trading post open to both Japanese and Europeans during this period.

Although constructed in 1636 to confine Portuguese residents, the fan-shaped island of Dejima served as the site of a Dutch factory (trading post) from 1641 until the end of the Edo Period. The Dutch flag flew from a pole of some 30 meters in height on the island. Across the canal, merchant houses lined the waterfront in the busy Edo-machi neighborhood. The Nagasaki Magistrate's Office, which stood on the hill to the rear overlooking Dejima, accommodated the Nagasaki Naval Institute and other facilities at the end of the Edo Period.
