The reliefs are very well worked out, with all the undercuts and detailed representation. One or two tears roll down when you internalize the stories presented.

The stairs are flanked by seven steles, which symbolize the seven years of existence of the concentration camp. The steles were designed and created by the sculptors René Graetz, Waldemar Grzimek and Hans Kies. On the back of the steles are texts by Johannes R. Becher. There are funeral funnels at the end of the stairs.
