The Maxplatz was created after the great city fire of 1823, because in Hof instead of a street market wanted to have a "real" marketplace with trees and a monument in the middle.
It was not until the 19th century that the weekly market moved from the area surrounding the town hall to Maxplatz. From the district "Orla" became by elimination of the middle development a place, on which one could move the market from the Ludwig route here.
The square got its name in honor of the ruling Bavarian King Maximilian, to whose 25th anniversary on 16 February 1825 he was inaugurated. In the lower part of Maxplatz, a fountain with scenes of medieval market scenes fits into today's events.

Nicely designed and quiet place. The Christmas market used to be here too.
