In 1560, the bankrupt sovereign donated a dilapidated building to the city of Hof, which, between 1563 and 1566, converted it into a town hall under master builder Nickel Hofmann. After the town fire of 1823, the current building was built in neo-Gothic style according to plans by Georg Erhard Saher. An older extension to the east belongs to the town hall complex. The new town hall extension, completed in 2021, is located on the west side, with a smaller section on the south side. Since May 2020, Eva Döhla (SPD) has been the mayor of Hof. She succeeds her father, Dieter Döhla (SPD), who served as mayor of Hof from 1988 to 2006.

The tourist information is also located in the town hall. The friendly staff will be happy to advise you and provide further information about Jean Paul's time in Hof.

There is also the pilgrim stamp "Rathaus Hof" for the pilgrim pass

History Trail 1: Northern City Center

Hof, the city of citizens, is the focus of the tour. Take two hours and experience the highs and lows of city life from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The tour begins next to the tourist information at the town hall, one of the few remaining Renaissance town halls in Germany, built by the then famous architect Nikolaus Hofmann from Halle between 1563 and 1566.

Downstairs were the merchants' sales tables and a prison cell.

The pillory for lighter offenses was next to the bank on Ludwigstrasse, below the annunciation dungeon. According to legend, "quarrelsome women" are said to have been displayed on chains here.
