As a chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the Holy Cross and Maria Magdalena, the St. Michaeliskirche in Hof was built around 1230 after the town was founded and in connection with the expansion of the new town.

During the founding of Hof's new town, a chapel dedicated to St. Michael was built in the 13th century, just off the main market street (Ludwigstraße). It was expanded into a stately Gothic hall church in several construction phases until the 16th century. The neo-Gothic interior, created after the town fire of 1823, is worth seeing, with its carved high altar and stained-glass choir windows.
