The city fortification of Erkelenz is a medieval fortification of the city of Erkelenz that is still preserved today. It was considered impregnable: 14 defensive towers were set into the 1.6 kilometer long city wall with its four gates, each of which represented a gate castle. In the run-up to her there was a double moat separated by a wall.

It was part of the city fortifications in the Middle Ages. The castle of the Duke of Geldern in Erkelenz was first mentioned by name in 1377. The mighty keep with a height of 23 meters has been preserved. The lower brickwork is 3.5 meters thick. The square tower with a side length of 13 meters pushes itself into the area in front of the once heavily fortified city. The smooth brick walls are only enlivened on the southeast side by the toilet bay and the windows of the spiral staircase. The wolf storm served as a castle prison. It was only accessible from above through a hole 70 cm in diameter.
The only access to the castle via a drawbridge and a gate with a Gothic arch was from Burgstrasse to the left of the Wolfsturm, which Burgstrasse encounters today. In 1500/1501 the castle was completely restored and at that time it got roughly its current appearance. Today's access via the outside staircase was only created during the restoration of the castle at the end of the fifties / beginning of the sixties. Today the castle is used for cultural purposes, such as exhibitions and concerts. A prerequisite for becoming a town in 1326 was the construction of a town fortification, which was completed in the 16th century. The wall was broken by gates in four places: the Brückor (Brückstraße), the Maartor (Aachener Straße), the Oerather Tor (Roermonder Straße) and the Cologne or Bellinghovener Tor. Remnants of the wall reminiscent of the Cologne Gate, which was lifted and renovated during extensive road construction work. Today it is in the pedestrian zone opposite the central bus stop called "Kölner Tor". The city wall was formerly reinforced by a series of watchtowers and windmill towers. The facade design of the parking deck on the east promenade, which lies in the course of the former wall ring, is reminiscent of these towers.
